The Rev. H.D. Brown and his wife, Libbie Beach Brown, founded the Children's Home Society of Washington in 1896. The agency was the first in the state to place children in adoptive and foster homes. Throughout the years, it has placed more than 30,000 children in adoptive homes. Volunteer leadership was very active in early child welfare issues, which helped craft the first child labor laws and establish a child welfare system in Washington. The Children s Home Society of Washington is the oldest statewide, private, nonprofit organization for children and families. Each year, the Society serves more than 38,000 children and parents in communities throughout the state. The agency provides family support, parent education, family resource centers and home-visiting programs, adoption resources, child and family counseling, early childhood development, fostering school success, residential treatment and foster care and advocacy.
