Wow, no thanks Joe

Joseph means well but isn't very sharp in the courtroom and visibly gets upset with the judge when overruled. That doesn't help me, the client, very much. I get the sense that he isn't liked much by anyone who works day to day in the courtroom which doesn't give a warm fuzzy. He was given multiple opportunities to cross examine witnesses that had conflicting information that I pointed out over several days' trial and he didn't address any of them when given the chance. I feel like he was very good at paperwork but his court room skills were certainly not impressive. I was hoping he would be quicker on his feet. He's much more expensive than he lets on, too. He waits until 2 days before court and asks for more money each time. That's kind of a bummer when you're desperate for action on his part.

Not sure what he does really

Either he doesn't know how to cross examine or just won't do it. Of the 7 witnesses that testified, he declined cross examination. As his client, I didn't appreciate that when I pointed out inconsistencies for him on note paper. I feel like all I did was hire a paperwork guy. No arguments at all, he simply agreed to everything. And like the other review, I believe I paid 2.5x more than what he quoted originally.

Retainer Blues

Mendoza quoted a "worst case" retainer and I paid that. Once paid, I didn't get any answers or any effort in court on his part. Requested motions and they went ignored by his office. Had to beg for paperwork issued by court. Becomes motivated again when another payment installment is due, however. Hit me twice two days before trial dates when clients are usually desperate. So far, I've paid 3x what was originally "worst case" numbers. He may charge less than the big names in Sierra Vista but, in the end, the billed hours make up the difference.

Unprepared

Unimpressed with the lack of work he put into the case. Highly motivated until retainer is paid however. Doesn't prepare witnesses and appears to learn about the case through interviews on the stand. Not an effective way to provide service to clients, I believe. Attacked a minor on the stand which the judge didn't like, accusing the child of lying. Not good when we're in a bench trial.
