I am responsible for a widow of our church. She was very sick this week and we all know exactly what the problem was. She and her late husband both had Lyme disease many years ago. It went untreated. Caught early enough it is relatively easily cured, but it was not diagnosed for many years. This has caused her recurring health issues over the years and considerable weakened her system. Her medical history is long and thick. After many years of this recurring issue she knows what it is and she knows what the treatment is. When she moved to the area and chose a physician she explained all of this to him so he would know and be able to quickly help.
They didn't help her at all. When she called for the antibiotic, she was told that they do not call in prescriptions over the phone, without an office visit. We arranged to get her there. I even helped her write down the symptoms she was having so she could clearly articulate them. It can be a challenge for an elderly person to convey everything that is happening over a weeks time in a five minute interview with a Doctor. Dr. Gibson was not available to see her. She was seen by a physicians assistant. The PA would not listen to her and insisted she was dehydrated and needed to go to the emergency room. She drove herself there and waited 3 hours while real emergencies were being treated. When the ER doctor finally saw her, he listened to her medical history and prescribed exactly the antibiotic she has always been prescribed when this condition reoccurs. She was not dehydrated.
I cannot imagine the medical justification for a primary care physician making her go to an ER doctor for the simple antibiotic she needed and her medical history showed had been prescribed repeatedly over the years for this very problem. It was so simple that it is frightening to think what might have happened had it been a complicated problem that the patient did not already know the answer to. She would have willingly done whatever they asked, without knowing the level of competence.
