The Middle Tennessee Natural Gas Utility District, founded in 1955, provides natural gas services to residents, businesses and industries within its boundaries. The agency serves more than 50,000 customers through a staff of over 100 employees. It provides space heaters, gas logs and grills, as well as pipeline and appliance safety information. The agency also offers an interest-free payment plan for natural gas water heaters. The Middle Tennessee Natural Gas Utility District installs gas meters, inspects heating equipment, makes service calls to diagnose appliance problems and locates natural gas mains and service lines in the areas of proposed excavations. Its Blue Flame University program includes information on geologists, meter readers, engineers and service technicians. The agency also conducts the Project Hometown Help program, which provides financial assistance for the payment of gas bills of senior citizens.
