Poor Goldsmithing Work

My Lady's gold ring Christmas gift took a turn for the worst when I returned the ring to Ed, the owner of Ryan Jewelers, to be downsized for her. She hasn't worn it since! When we picked it up on schedule we were shocked by the lack of quality soldering/brazing presented to us. In addition, there was an obvious scratch on the outside surface.

On the inside surface, where the joint was, Ed had added a "reinforcing bead" of gold. I call it a blob of gold because it did not feather or blend smoothly to the band. It just sat there!

Totally unexceptable!

Happily I found an experienced goldsmith that is used by area Mall jewelers for their repairs.

I went to the owner of the company (Ed), who is also the jewlery designer. I had a picture of a diamond engagement ring I wanted custom made. I asked him if he would be able to create this ring, by a specified date, within a specific range, and with a .75 carat diamond or smaller. He told me absolutely no problem. At the end of the interaction, I gave a downpayment and was on my way. Throughout the process he never emailed me to update me on the progress of the ring and all of the interactions were then initiated by me until the ring was done. I emailed him a few times asking if things were still on track to be finished by the date and how everything was going. He told me we were on track and he knew my specifications for the ring and he was all set. I needed to change the size of the ring 1 1/2 weeks before the ring was to be finished and again he said no problem.

So comes the date the ring is to be finished... not done yet. I was told the diamond was out getting certified and it would be done the following week. I needed this ring on Thursday 8/22 as I was going on vacation, where the proposal took place, on Friday 8/23. Wouldn't you know it the ring was finished on 8/22... my ultimate deadline! I walked into the store and he told me how he had to go with a bigger diamond than I wanted to make the perfect ring for me. With the bigger diamond came a higher price. He took advantage of the fact that I had a custom ring made and needed it that day. If I hadn't been so attached to the ring I would have walked out then and there. But when a custom ring is made, it is becasue it is a special design that you can't find in any store. So he originally told me that he could create this ring .75 carats or less for the price I was asking. Now I am looking at a ring that is 1.08 carats and a price 35% higher than my maximum amount originally given to him! The diamond was EGL certified (not the industry standard) and had the diamond appraised by UGS (do your own research on how much this company inflates the prices). He told me when I was purchasing the ring that just for me he would only charge me the price of the appraisal of the diamond that he received from UGS which was for what I paid him. He specifically told me then, face to face, that he wasn't charging me for the gold, extra fees, or his time and expertise. While I am now totally questioning him, and not wanting to do business with him... I want this custom ring and need it today!

This is a shame because his work is beautiful, but his ethics are awful!!!!!

I purchase the ring and leave the store, go on vaction, propose and all is wonderful!

For insurance purposes I took the ring to an independent appraiser. The ring that I just bought appriased at 35% LOWER than what I paid for it!! I contacted the owner, Ed, telling him the result of the appraisal and asked what my options were in this situation that the ring doesn't appraise for what I bought it for. His response was unprofessional, asking me to send him the credentials of the appraiser to make him quailified to judge Ed's work, telling me that while he doesn't regret making the ring for me he is close to it. I told him that I would have paid the price for his work because it is beautiful, but he told me he was only charging me for the diamond and it doesn't appraise to even close what he charged me, could he break down the price of what he charged me. He responded with "...what differecne it makes to break down my cost to you it is my business and it is a proprietary information I wish not share with anyone, I told you what the package deal is, nobody ask what would cost you to do your work and it is nobody's business anyway."

I would never recommend this business to anyone!
