Illinois Government, based in Springfield, Ill., comprises the executive, legislative and the judiciary branches. The government s executive branch is headed by the governor. The general assembly, made up of the 59-member senate and 118-member House of Representatives, governs the legislative branch. The judicial services are provided by the Supreme Court. Illinois Government operates under the 1970 state constitution, the fourth in the state s history. The 1970 constitution modernized the previous 1870 constitution by extending anti-discrimination rights, proclaiming healthy environment rights, granting home-rule rights to larger cities and counties tax and rule without state authorization, and giving the line-item veto to the governor. The state offers visitors a variety of features, such as tourist attractions, parks, historic sites and museums, outdoor recreation, fairs and festivals, and sporting events.
