The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air and water, the safe management of toxic and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources. The department s four regional offices Western, Central, Northeast and Southeast are the hubs of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. These offices provide permitting, compliance, enforcement and cleanup activity. Staff based in these offices primarily work in the field and are familiar with the communities they serve. Office locations include Springfield, Worcester, Boston and Lakeville, Mass. The Springfield office has jurisdiction over more than 100 communities. The region s natural features include the Connecticut River, the Quabbin Reservoir and the Berkshire Mountains.
