Stamford Motor Sports has been taking care of my toys for over 5 years. Great service. It is true that they are a little expensive but they ALWAYS go the extra mile to make sure the work is done right and my rig performs. Well worth it. They also gave me a great deal on my Seadoo RXTx. Thanks Chris! .... Scott March

My 2001 Goldwing snapped a throttle cable close to Stamford so I had it towed to Stamford Motorsports. The Fuel Injector has been throwing an error code (flashing lights when in neutral) indicating a right cylinder bank knock sensor needs replacement or rewiring.

I asked them to take a look at what it would cost to do the two things and get back to me with an estimate before doing anything. I thought it would take 2-3 hours to do the throttle, because the top shelter, radio, and possibly the fuel tank would need to be removed. The knock sensor is located under the right bank cylinger covers and I thought it should take about an hour to install. Their rate is $95 per hour. Their diagnostic fee is $95.

They called to say it would cost $540 to do the throttle cables. There are about a dozen GoldWings in the group I ride with, everyone with an opinion says that it is expensive. One guy had that done just a couple of weeks ago, for $290. The knock sensor was $245 extra, installed (about an hour labor and the rest for the sensor).

When I called for an explanation, I got frustraation from the service manager, Mike, who turned me over to the owner, Chris, who threw in a double dose of hostility.

Fine, I said, I'll pay your $95 and repair it elsewhere. This is when they said the diagnostic charge was $343 because they had to disassemble the bike. I asked if I showed up right then if the bike would be all in pieces. They said no, they put it together already--hence the labor charges.

I paid the $540, they threw in the labor for free on changing the air filter as an act of conciliation.

I asked the GoldWing mechanic why they charged me for a diagnostic charge when the error code is read off the tachometer. He showed me a connector bus under the seat to which he attached a computer and had to read all the error codes and reset them one at a time. It takes about 5 minutes to remove 6 massive allen bolts to remove the seat. I know, because the fuse box is accessed the same way, and I had lost my headlights on a road trip and replaced a fuse in a NAPA parking lot.

These are the facts, you decide if you want to have your bike repaired there. Even on a good day their attitude is go away if you don't like the way we do things. I don't think it'll change whether you go there for your Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda bike, quad, or wave runner.
