On June 16, 1919, a vote was held in Montcalm County, Mich., on the question of adopting a county road system. The residents of the county voted 1,653-327 in favor. The first meeting of the three-member Montcalm County Road Commission was on July 29, 1919. The Montcalm County Road Commission maintains 1,500 miles of primary and local roads. The commission also maintains 160 miles of state trunk line roads in a contract with the Michigan Department of Transportation. There are 20 townships within Montcalm County. All play a major role in the improvements done on local roads. Montcalm County Road Commission's main source of funding comes from the Michigan Transportation Fund, which is a gas and weight tax.
