Morbid obesity is a serious medical condition where a person's body weight has exceeded healthy limits and produces life-limiting problems. Recognized as a major health problem affecting millions of Americans, morbid obesity can produce problems including:

  • Heart disease/failure
  • High blood pressure
  • Chronic joint pain
  • Diabetes
  • Sleep apnea and many others

In addition to these physical ailments, those afflicted with morbid obesity can also suffer an impaired quality of life - increased clothing and transportation seating costs, possible job discrimination, inadequate health insurance coverage, social isolation and low self-esteem.

Obesity is an excess of body fat. Doctors generally agree that men with more than 25% of body fat and women with more than 30% of body fat are obese. Obesity is a chronic syndrome which occurs for multiple reasons and is associated with numerous complications.

Medical weight management is a conservative approach that can improve physical health.  It includes motivational techniques to help the participant develop regular exercise habits and reduce the amount of fats and carbohydrates in foods that are eaten.

Small amounts of weight loss, such as 10% of body weight, can have important effects on underlying risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and control of blood sugar.  Improvements in mood can also occur with behavioral weight loss treatment.

Defining acceptable results of the program should include outcomes such as decreased cholesterol, improved blood pressure, decreased joint pain, and enhanced sense of well being.  Severely obese participants are unlikely to achieve "Ideal" body weight but significant improvements can be achieved if goals are realistic.
