What is philosophical counseling?

 

 

The purpose of philosophy, which means the love of wisdom, is to obtain truth and knowledge of reality.

 

Its practical application is to rationally guide a person in their life so they can attain tangible improvements in the quality of their life and more easily attain their worthy goals and ends.

 

Philosophical counseling “consists of a philosopher helping an individual deal with a problem or an issue that is of concern to that individual.

 

It is often when problems become too complex that a philosopher can generally be of help.  For example, when in our modern society, values seem to conflict, when facts appear contradictory, when reasoning about a problem becomes trapped within a circle, or when life seems too difficult to deal with or unexpectedly appears meaningless.

 

The philosophical counselor understands that most individuals live by many unexamined assumptions and values that can affect thinking and behavior in puzzling or distressing ways.

 

Through a series of dialogues, the philosophical counselor helps the client come to an awareness of hidden biases, unspoken assumptions, and conflicting values that may be preventing an inquiry into alternative perspectives that could help to ease the problem.

 

The philosophical counselor is skilled at spotting inconsistencies, contradictions and other problems in a person’s reasoning style and skilled at actively listening, at separating large masses of information into manageable pieces and putting them all back together again.”

Fee $150  50-minute session.  I see clients in the Studio City / Universal City area, although I can travel to a quite location in your area if that is more practicable in your circumstances.
