Founded in 1938, the Seafarers International Union is an organization of more than 10 autonomous labor unions of mariners, fishermen and boatmen working aboard vessels flagged in the United States and Canada. The organization has over 35,000 members and is the largest maritime labor organization in the United States. Its members are workers in the deck, steward and engine departments and are represented aboard military support, commercial trade, tugboats, passenger ships, barges and gaming vessels. The Seafarers International Union s membership includes eligibility for access to health care, retirement and education benefits.
