L.J. Hughes & Sons, Inc. is the largest diamond drilling contractor  on the U.S. East Coast. We have been privately held and family-owned for over four generations. Since 1946, the company has drilled 16,182,172 feet. Diamond Drilling is used in coal and mineral exploration to obtain core samples of the geological strata. Geotechnical Drilling is used to obtain soil and core samples used in the design of structures including buildings, dams, roads, and bridges. Environmental Drilling is used to set monitoring wells to obtain ground water samples, often in contaminated areas. Pressure Grouting is used to pump grout slurries under high pressure into subsurface cracks and fissures to form impermeable barricades to seal off water when constructing mine shafts and slopes as well as bridge and dam foundations. We are a member of both the National Drilling Association and the National Ground Water Association. L.J. Hughes & Sons, Inc. is capable of operating 25 drill rigs within a seven state area consisting of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. We have a maintenance and fabrication shop where we service and maintain our fleet of crew trucks, cargo trucks, water trucks, drill trucks, drill rigs, pump units and grouters.  With our fleet of shop maintenance trucks we can make immediate repairs in the field to reduce our down time to a minimum.

Amenities
L.J. Hughes & Sons, Inc. offers three sizes of the Boart Longyear Wireline Core System. The first size is BQWL which drills a 2.36 " diameter hole and recovers a 1.43" diameter core. The second size is the NQWL which drills a 2.98" diameter hole and recovers a 2.00" diameter core. The third size is the HQWL which drills a 3.78" diameter hole and recovers a 2.50" diameter core. By using both the NQWL and HQWL systems, we are able to do Window Wedging to obtain multiple core samples of the same stratum in one hole. Our standard size is the NQWL system in which we have drilled holes ranging in depth from 5 feet to 3,000 feet. Our Geotechnical services consist of a 6.25" diameter Hollow Stem Auger Boring, 3" diameter Solid Stem Auger Boring, 2" diameter Split Spoon Sampling, 3" diameter Split Spoon Sampling, 3" diameter Shelby Tube Sampling, 3" Stationary Piston Sampling and NQWL Core Drilling. While Pressure Grouting we use Aardvark pneumatic packers, concrete grout mixers, and Bean 435 pressure pumps having an intermittent pressure of 1,000 PSI and continuous pressure of 800 PSI.
