Kyphon's mission is to be a recognized worldwide leader in restoring spinal function through minimally invasive therapies. The company was established in 1994 to develop and market a proprietary balloon technology for orthopedic applications. In 1999, it initiated limited direct sales of its first commercial products, the KyphX Inflatable Bone Tamp and accessory instruments, to several major medical centers. By 2000, it had commenced full commercial introduction in the United States. More than 6,800 physicians who perform minimally invasive spine procedures in the United States, Europe and throughout the world have been trained to perform balloon kyphoplasty. Kyphon is headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif.
