Provided by YPmobileAfter breaking down in Susanville heading back to Redding on Highway 44, I began looking for a shop capable of doing some transmission or transfer case repair. There seemed to be only a couple of options, and everybody seemed to think that Rod's Transmission was the best. My 1995 Ford Explorer went in to Rod's shop.
Rod gave me an estimate of $1900, and stayed true to this estimate. When I got the truck back, there were problems with the new transfer case identical to what I had just suffered with the old one. The repair was only 1800 miles old.
Ultimately, I am not dissatisfied with the work that Rod's Transmission did. Failures can happen in any shop, and Rod was not the one who rebuilt this transfer case, yet he installed the product which came from Transtar. Since I live in Redding, it was necessary to bring the vehicle back to Rod, and this was an inconvenience, however it was necessary. Again, not Rod's fault.
The reason I give this shop two stars instead of just one is because I feel that Rod is trying to make this right and is indeed standing behind his work. The reason I gave him two stars instead of three, is because it took 37 phone calls to finally get a response back to ask a question about how to go about dealing with the warranty.
I was told that the repair can take two or three weeks, and it has now been over a month. I am without a vehicle, and have called the shop 22 times, and always get an answering machine and never get a call back.
I understand that Rod's Transmission is a small shop, perhaps with only rod and one other worker or maybe two, and that he's behind in his work. I won't complain if it takes several months to get my vehicle back, but communication is the key.
It is my recommendation that if you are searching reviews to find a shop that will do quality work, and you want the shop to stay in touch with you and let you know what's going on, you should avoid Rod's Transmission.
In the Redding area, try Hartnell Transmission. Not only did they do a great job rebuilding the transmission in my vehicle, they called me throughout the warranty cycle asking if there was any issues!
In closing, Rod stands behind his work, honor the warranty, and has worked with me in every way except communication.
