The first time I walked into Gracie Tampa to train, I was a lot like many others when they walk into a Jiu-Jitsu school...a little nervous and little intimidated. I was put at ease very quickly during head coach Rob Kahn's lessons and when the experienced guys took their time with me and truly showed me they were here to help me learn and not just choke me out over and over.

There is no better teacher in the entire world of jiu-jitsu than Rob Khan....I honestly believe that. He has no patience for ego's so they are left at the door by everyone or Rob will not hesitate to intervene. As a practitioner, he's among the best in the world. As a teacher, he conveys every aspect of the art in a way very few can. He's patient with each student yet firm and won't hesitate to push if that's what is needed. Anyone can teach the physical movements of a move but he backs it up with years of time tested experience that few have. He provides reasons and justification for each subtle move and teaches you how to think and relax while doing so. What I love about each move he teaches is that he teaches each move 3 ways...in a real life street encounter, in a jiu-jitsu environment and MMA. Needless to say, his teaching level is in a class by itself.

What also makes a good jiu-jitsu & mma school are those you're surrounded with. Gracie Tampa is a family and everyone there is always helping each other get better. I've gained lifelong friends and I wouldn't trade having the opportunity to train there for anything. From Rob's training, we've had several guys make it to the UFC and ADCC so you know that while you're training...you're training with some of the best in the world.

Gracie Tampa isn't just jiu-jitsu though, we have great stand-up training (muay-thai, kickboxing, etc), wrestling and Judo. It really is a well rounded MMA school including great classes for kids. The kids program is actually really impressive. As you can probably tell, lol...I can't say enough about this school.

As an FYI, I have no idea what the last 2 reviews are talking about...there's no "entry fee" and my monthly fee has never changed in years. It's a flat monthly fee and then you can go to as many classes as you'd like...unlimited.

After my 1-year membership had expired (on 12/2014) my account was charged a monthly fee. I contacted Gracie South Tampa about reversing the charge -- in specific, I spoke to a person named Randy -- and asked if they could reverse the monthly charge. At this point I had not attended the gym for over six months. Instead of reversing the charge, my account was charged double the monthly fee and they refused to reverse the charge. I had to contact my bank and it became a big mess. Be careful with your financial information.

I would not recommend Gracie J...

I would not recommend Gracie Jiu Jitsu in South Tampa to anyone I liked.

There are much better gyms in South Tampa to learn striking and kickboxing skills, that don't have the stench of arrogance that this gym has. If you are strictly looking for Jiu Jitsu and not striking, unfortunately it is going to be your only choice, however if you are looking for a gym that offers a more well rounded skill set, this would not be my recommendation.

My reason - Upon signing up my son, I was told that after the first month, where you are only allowed to take 2 classes a week, you could participate in as many intro classes they offered. However, after the first month they renigged on this and said it would be additional money to join other intro class. So that is $155 per month plus another class fee, if you want to take more than 2 classes a week. These guys are scammers and won't last in South Tampa!

My recommendation is that prior to signing up at this gym you go take a class at Tampa Muay Thai. The two gyms are at opposite ends of the spectrum and it is obvious immediately. I pay $130 per month and can go to as many classes as my body can handle. They offer traditional Muay Thai training, boxing classes and cross-fitness training with very talented, champion instrucors, and all egos and arrogance are left at the front door. There is no $295 sign up fee and no binding contract to get out of when you realize that everyone who is employed by the gym could care less about their customers needs! So in short choose to smell sweat, not arrogance and choose another gym!!!

Gracie Tampa is Great!

I love everything about Gracie Tampa. I am 42 years old and I had no prior martial arts experience when I joined Gracie Tampa. I joined because I was always so interested in knowing what and how the fighters on the UFC did the things they did. Now when I watch the UFC it's so much more enjoyable because I know and understand much better what they are doing. The best is seeing an opportunity before Joe Rogan mentions it and explaining to my friends what the fighter should do and then actually see them do it.

When I first joined Gracie Tampa I was expecting for some or most members to have a chip on their shoulders and it would be a tough crowd to try to break into. What I found was just the opposite. Everyone was friendly and eager to help you learn. The instructors make sure that less experienced students are paired up with more experienced students. These experienced students take the time to really help you understand the moves. The time and effort that everyone puts in your growth as a student at Gracie Tampa makes you eager to help the new students once you have more experience.

The cycle of help grows constantly and it all starts with the respect and dedication from the owner Rob Kahn and his excellent staff. Rob Kahn received his black belt from the "Royce Gracie". He has a deep understanding of the sport and is always learning and developing new moves. He is a true master of the sport.

For all you parents out there the junior or kids program is incredible. It is run by Cristina Rodriguez. She is an excellent instructor and is great with kids. She really cares about each and every one of students. Her love for the sport really shows though the time and energy she puts into the development of her students.

I highly recommend that you check out Gracie Tampa. You obviously have an interest or you wouldn’t be reading this, so check it out. My only recreate in joining is that I didn’t do it six years ago when I first heard about the school. I was afraid I would injure myself. Man was that a misconception! Safety is a priority at Gracie Tampa. There is nothing that should hold you back.

Hope to see you there!

Gracie tampa is the premier school on the east coast

I came to GT from upstate NY I was just a weak onion farmer who could not fight my way out of wet paper bag. I was shy and reserved. I had no friends. Under the expert guidance of my sensei Rob Kahn I learned Jiu jitsu and with my new skills came confidence. I lost my virginity shortly after and became awesome. Now i can wear my tap out shirt in public and I feel cool. JIU JITSU

I am the new guy...!

I have been training with GT for over month now. I have never trained in any short of martial arts prior to GT and they are showing me the fundamentals in striking, grappling and wresting. They are very professional, have a highly structured environment and provide a comfortable place to train. In the short time I have been training, in addition to learning MMA, my fitness level (I am a dedicated gym member) has increased dramatically as well. They have day and night classes, so I can easily create a program around my busy schedule.

Top Notch

These guys are amazing. Training at Gracie Tampa is an incredible experience with top notch trainers and great training partners. Lots of hands on experience in the training process and Rob Kahn's teaching style emphasizes a lot more than merely learning technique. A great way to improve your conditioning and confidence for all levels. I can't recommend GT highly enough!
