Established in 1909, the Grand Traverse Road Commission is responsible for the construction and operational maintenance of the state of Michigan's roadway system. The commission is located in Traverse City, Mich., and has a staff of professional people for the maintenance of local roads and state highways. It also issues permits to the residential and commercial sectors for resurfacing operations on the roads, such as placement of fences and other structures, as well as any changes to the road surface. Additionally, the commission utilizes several methods for dust control on the roads. It operates the Whitewater Township Special Assessment Project for the grading and pavement of Watson, Mabel, Deal, Lackey and Skegemog Point roads. Its other projects include improving the Hammond and High Lake roads intersection.
