CARO-Mi Lodge was established in 1945 at Highway 25 and Greenville Street outside of Saluda, NC. The original owners, the Mehaffeys, opened CARO-Mi Lodge during the months of June, July, and August, and worked the remainder of the year for the Florida East Coast Railroad in Miami, FL. Hence, the name "CARO-Mi" comes from the words "Carolina" and "Miami." Due to the Tennessee Valley Authority condemning much of the area in Polk and Henderson counties around the original location, CARO-Mi opened at its current location in 1957. The Mehaffeys retired from the railroad company and operated CARO-Mi full time. The guest rooms and cabins were gone and CARO-Mi Lodge became CARO-Mi Dining Room. The Mehaffeys retired from CARO-Mi in 1963 and since then the restaurant has changed ownership three times. The Stafford family has owned and operated the restaurant since 1990. We strive for each and every guest to have an enjoyable and memorable experience and leave with all their hunger needs fully satisfied. We invite you to enjoy Mother Nature's ambiance of the Pacolet River while relaxing in a rocking chair on our covered porch. Whether it is our Carolina country ham (cut and processed in our kitchen), fried fresh chicken, or our delectable mountain trout, among many other options, we're sure you'll enjoy and can't wait to come back for another meal. CARO-Mi is located in the heart of the Pacolet Valley, 3 miles outside of Tryon, NC, at 3231 U.S. Highway 176, Tryon, NC 28782. Reservations are not required but are recommended.

I am a South Carolina Native and ehave been going there since the mid 1960’s and even I know they don’t take plastic. They never have and never will. This is not unusual for Mom and Pop Restaurants.I am surprised you did not know this being a Western North Carolina Native. This must have been your first time? I can’t believe in this day and time you did not Google them. if you had there would be no questions as to the Menu or methods of payments.

This is a small quaint Mountain Restaurant that has not changed a thing ( except prices) since Opening in the 1950’s. It is most famous for it’s Country Ham, Red Eye Gravy and Macaroni Salad. The Rainbow Trout and Flounder are also good.

If you have not been there it is definitely worth the trip!

Expensive and they don't take plastic!

Caro Mi is a WNC tradition that has been around quite a while. Being a WNC native, we had the opportunity to eat there recently. As mentioned before, veggies, etc are served family style, but you do order your entree off of a somewhat limited menu.

Be prepared, entree's start about $12 and go up from there. Another thing to be prepared for is that they don't take credit/debit cards- cash & check only. I was really surprised to find any business in the 21st century that doesn't take plastic; thankfully, I avoided an embarrasing situation because for once, I actually had cash with me. The price for my wife, myself, and our child was $48 including gratuity.
