First Christian Church of Atlanta
4532 Lavista Rd, Tucker, GA 30084
First Christian Church of Atlanta has a long and storied history, which stretches back to just 3 years after Atlanta was incorporated into a city after changing its name from Marthasville to Atlanta. The church began in 1850 as a small group of thinking Christians who met regularly in homes until a building was erected in the center of downtown. Four buildings ( the first building was burned to the ground during Sherman's march! ) and 160 years later, the congregation remains strong and vibrant. Here is a family of faith which has not only survived, but grown in maturity through the trials of the Civil War, the Civil Rights movement, and the myriad social and technological changes our city has witnessed in a century and a half of progress. From the very beginning our church's leaders have included men and women, rich and poor, highly educated statesmen and scruffy pioneer preachers. Today's church leaders also represent a diverse community. As one of our favorite worship hymns phrases it: We come from many places, and we are not the same ; yet God's strong love has called us to meet in Jesus' name! First Christian Church of Atlanta is a member church of Christian Church ( Disciples of Christ ).
