Great fresh sweet bread and real home made mexican food

I remember when I was a kid coming to El Rio and getting great food and bread. For a while I remember that both the food and bread was no longer good. Not sure what had happened. I went back last year and have been returning almost weekly. They have new owners who are always there, very nice, make me feel at home. Food is great, bread is fresh. Recommend it to everyone!!!!

Yum!

A Mexican-American friend brought some pastries from El Rio to a company picnic. They were fantastic! The empanadas were my favorite--little fruit hand pies with a touch of cinnamon in the filling or the crust--not sure which. They were fresh and crumbled in my mouth as I bit off each bite. When I visited the bakery myself I found a small Mom & Pop kind of place with several display cases filled with Mexican pastries, including donuts, but not like your average American donut! There is something extra in the dough that makes them extra delicious. You can also buy dinners and take-out food as well as the pastries and a selection of chilled sodas in the fridge, some from Mexico.I think the previous poster doesn't know what cochitos really are--they are like gingerbread cookies and meant to be crunchy. I think that reviewer had some kind of ax to grind.

Have lost all sense of serving quality products

For more than 30 years my family patronized this bakery. Good pan birote, a vast array of traditional mexican pastries like pan de huevo, lengua de suegra, cochitos, etc. I hadn't been here in 4 years, I live and work across town now. On 1/6/10 I stopped in to buy a rosca for El Dia de Los Reyes Magos. They had run out. I viewed the limited array of pastries and saw a tray full of cochitos. I bought a dozen thinking fondly back to my childhood. What a disappointment to get them home. Not only were they not fresh, they were NOT day old, they were DAYS OLD, HARD AS A ROCK and completely in edible. Save yourself the trouble. Do not bother with this bakery. They obviously have lost any pride in producing quality pastry. What a disappointment. You are SHAMESLESS El Rio Bakery. $6 for a dozen rock hard pieces of dough!
