Established in 1819, Tuscaloosa Police Department employs more than 200 sworn officers and over 50 civilians. The department provides patrolling, law enforcement and crime prevention services. It operates administration, communications, homicide, housing, training and narcotics divisions. Its criminal investigations division intervenes in the cases of robberies, burglaries, auto thefts, serious assaults and financial crimes. Tuscaloosa Police Department has a special response unit that operates during terrorist activities and hostage and emergency situations. The department operates a patrol division that arrests offenders, conducts investigations, gathers evidences and responds to emergency and nonemergency calls for service. Its records division processes and manages records, statistical reports, clearance letters, and arrest and search warrants. In addition, it conducts safety-related training programs for schools, civic groups and the general public. Tuscaloosa Police Department also offers Drug Abuse Resistance Education and bicycle and pedestrian safety programs. The department is headquartered in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
