Physiatry, or Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R), is a medical specialty focused on treating the whole person, not just the condition, for patients with acute and chronic pain and injuries. Using a highly personalized approach and the latest, non-surgical treatments and modalities including injections, nerve blocks, and rehabilitative physical therapy, the Physiatrist's goal is to restore function and promote independence in activities of daily living - and possibly helping people to avoid surgery. The Physiatrist works with a team of health care professionals that includes physicians of other medical specialties, nurses and physical/occupational therapists. Physiatrists complete four years of medical school plus an additional four years of residency training, and many go on to complete fellowships in various specialties.
