Bad Customer Service and Pricing, but Gym Okay

I was interested in finding out if the club did month-to-month like the other clubs and also the fitness program we have through employment. I wasn't given a straight answer until I followed the sales guy back to an office. There I found out that the m-2-m required 1st and last month up front of $99 each, an activation fee of $79, an ACH debit from my checking account each month with 30 days notice for them to stop taking out the ACH. That does not sound like m-2-m to me, it sounds like a longer-term contractual obligation that only benefits them. The other option was an 18-mo contract with 1st & last month up front at $79 each, activation fee of $25, same ACH debit terms, $20 freeze for months I don't want to use the gym, and a $179 cancellation fee if I want out early.

When I asked why they cost is so much more than Bally's and Gold's Gym when they have the same basic set up, Nicholas mentioned that they have a full towel service plus shampoo and conditioner. He also told me that a man had died using Bally's sauna because of some sort of gym disease. He said they have higher standards and are more sanitary at Spectrum. The BBB shows more of the other gyms currently registered with them, where this Spectrum was not.

The quote given to me was on scratch paper, the sales person was less than personable, I don't care to hear unsubstantiated claims of death by competition, and I don't like Spectrum's terms. This is not my first experience with them, and all 3-4 experiences were fairly identical.

**We have used Spectrum gym in the past and we were somewhat satisfied with it. The racquetball center had missing equipment, but otherwise the gym itself is good.

(Those are my opinions and recollection of conversation.)
