Southern States Cooperative Inc. was formerly known as Virginia Seed Service. Operational since 1923, it is one of the largest farmer cooperatives in the United States. The firm is a member of CRF, an animal nutrition research group and FFR, which specializes in forage seed-breeding. Southern States Cooperative Inc. operates more than 1,200 retail locations in 23 states of the United States.
