California Department of Consumer Affairs protects and serves consumers while ensuring a fair and competitive marketplace. It protects and serves consumers by making available information that educates them about their rights and responsibilities. It helps ensure a competent and fair marketplace by establishing minimum standards of competency in more than 100 business and 200 professional categories, including doctors, dentists, cosmetologists, contractors and automotive repair shops. The department maintains effective relationships with consumer and public interest groups, business and professional communities, law enforcement agencies and other government agencies. The Department of Consumer Affairs provides 40 regulations that establish minimum qualifications and levels of competency for licensure, license, register or certify practitioners, investigate complaints and discipline violators.
