The other reviewer is totally wrong about the service. Everytime we go there the service is just fine and the sushi chef is always happy to make whatever we ask for regardless if it is on the menu or not. We like going to kaigan. Yes it is a whole in the wall but we like it.

So far I have been to this restaurant a total of 3 times on 3 separate occassions. During all 3 occassions, the service was unacceptable. I can personally attest that I was not only treated unfairly(i.e. having to ask for silver wear several times, having to ask for a menu, to ask for a glass of water, to ask for a straw, to ask to be seated), two gentlemen who were working during the last and final time that I came, looked right at me and said "nothing"; did not say "Hello", "How are you?", "How may I help you?", absolutely nothing. I had called in an order 2 hours ahaead of time and when I went to pick it up, I had to wait for 20 minutes to even receive my order or to be acknowledged. In general I would not recommend this restaurant to ANYONE, until the staff learn the proper etiquette of serving ALL customers fairly and with RESPECT. I'm not necessarily claiming racism (though I am an African American woman), but I will definitley say that the fact that I had to tell both of these genteleman (both Asian) "Excuse Me", a total of 4 times, before they even acknowledged me and served me, is both ridiculous and outrageous. Regardless of race, I WAS a FREQUENTING customer, and did not deserve to be treated unfairly; bottom line, THEY WERE WRONG!
