Shaw Avenue Elementary School, located in Valley Stream, N.Y., has an enrollment of more than 700 students in grades kindergarten through six. The school houses a modern library, art room and music room. The institution is the recipient of a grant called Jazz Sampler from Friends of the Arts, a nonprofit organization funded through the National Endowment of the Arts that works to provide students with experiences in Jazz. The students work with artists in residence in the areas of dance and song writing. At the conclusion of the residencies, the students perform and display their creative artistic endeavors to the school community. Through the collaborative efforts of the Shaw Avenue parent-teacher association, professional performances are brought to the school.
