There is a reason why this place is called Happy Dogs, and that reason is Sylvia, the matriarch of the Korean American family that owns and operates this small but bustling hot dog stand across from the Van Nuys Civic Center. She always has a huge, beautiful, sparkling smile on her face, and she knows her regulars by name. I always love the manner in which she calls out my name like she is singing a song. If she hasn't seen me in a while, she will greet me enthusiastically, like an old friend, and asks about my cats. The service is great, it's pretty fast, too, even when it's busy; the family runs it like a well-oiled machine. The breakfast burrito is especially fantastic, stuffed full of anything you want, and all for a great price. The veggie burrito is also a favorite of mine; I don't think I've ever had anything on the menu that I didn't like and would try again, it's that good. Parking is limited to two spots in the rear, but you can park for free on the side streets nearby, for two hours. There's some outdoor seating and a small indoor seating area as well, but this is primarily a take out joint. By all means, check it out the next time you find yourself going to court.
