The Sturgis Family moved to Vero Beach in 1954 from Hammond, Indiana. Jack Senior and Josephine Sturgis started Sturgis Lumber & Plywood Company in 1955. The family became active in their church and many other community groups including the Kiwanis Club, Exchange Club, and Rotary Club. Jack Senior served as Mayor and a member of the City Council in the 1960s. Josephine Sturgis taught second grade at Vero Beach Elementary School and Rosewood Elementary School for 29 years. She taught over 900 students over the years.
