Should have read the reviews

I took my Yorkie there because of GI distress the took multiple expensive tests and X-rays, but no fecal test. They diagnosed her with stress colitis and send me home with a whole regimen of expensive medications. When at the desk I was told my total was over 400.00. I asked to make payments because that is a huge amount of money but was told rudly "no". The symptoms returned and we had to go to energy vet who did a fecal exam and she had tape worms. If the doctor at Vinton vet would have used common sense and ordered that simple test I would have saved so much money and my dog would have gone through a let less sufferings. I will not be back to Vinton Vet and will find a reputable vet that will address my dogs real issues.

If you are going to see this vet, you had best have two hundred dollars in your pocket. I believe they are trying to retire off my dog and my check book.

I had the most horrible experience at this place. Dr. Gallagher killed my dog. My sweet little dog. Through her negligence my dog had to be put down. We took her there to improve the quality of her life and she ignored her symptoms as we were told to leave and on the way home her temp rose to 108 and she stopped breathing. She ended up blind and suffered brain damage. She is the worst vet I have ever encountered and I have been to several of the years. Just uncaring!

I have to say that the review ...

I have to say that the review on the payment during the mourning for the deceased pet is not fair. The vet tells you during the visit that they will come in to settle up during the visit so you don't have to worry about things after the pet is gone...that way you can meditate and don't have to worry about money. That is what I was told, and we were fine with that...because when your pet is gone the last thing you want is to worry about a bill. Dr Gallagher is outstanding, and was very informative on the process of letting our pet go. She was with us and explained what was going on the entire time, and cried right along side of us. We had time afterwards alone with our pet to say goodbye, and there was no pressure in rushing us out. They are a very compassionate and loving clinic. I wouldn't take my other pet anywhere else. And when the time comes for her to go, I will take her there.

Do not ever use this company. ...

Do not ever use this company. I have used them for over ten years and been thrilled except for the prices, until today. I had to put my dog down who I've had since I was a kid (13 years, would have been 14 next month). As I was saying goodbye to one of my best friends before letting the vet do their work, an employee came into the room as I was preparing for the loss of an animal and said "Hey, I was wondering if you could pay this bill now.". Instead of waiting til the procedure was done and letting me do it at the front desk. It was the most unprofessional trip I've ever encountered and will never return with any pets in the future. The entire experience was sickening and the unprofessional-ism did not help with the situation by any means. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!

DO NOT USE THIS CLINIC FOR ANY ORTHOPEDIC SURGERIES

I took my dog to this clinic to repair a simple, common injury to his knee (CCL tear....similar to ACL tear in humans) After undergoing surgery, my dog was more lame than before the repair. He was unable to bear weight on that leg....yet the vet instructed me to "push" the dog to walk more and increase rehab exercises. I was stupid enough to take his advise. Consequently, the CCL in the other knee (stifle) tore while he was recuperating from the first surgery (also very common), so he was in constant pain and unable to walk. The vet that performed the first surgery wanted to perform surgery on the other stifle. Realizing the vet had "botched" the first surgery, I requested a referral to take my dog to Virginia Tech for a second opinion. The vet was clearly irritated and strongly discouraged me from going to VT, or to allow the ORTHOPEDIC SPECIALISTS from performing a "risky, new" surgery to correct the problem. I had no other option....my dog was in so much pain that I considered putting him to sleep. I took him to VT.

Our surgeon at VT was phenomenal. Upon assessing my dog, he determined his lameness was "3" on a 1-4 scale. Radiographs revealed what appeared to be a bone fragment which the vet at Vinton Vet. Hospital had chipped during surgery, and the fragment had lodged very close to the nerve in the stifle. It was too dangerous to remove the fragment, yet he assured me that the "risky, new" surgery (TPLO, which had been successfully preformed for over 10 years) would help my dog walk again and have a better quality of life. When I picked my dog up 3 days post-op, he was already bearing weight on the leg and walking better than before. A TPLO was performed several months later to correct the other leg with the same amazing results. Today, the dog that I came very close to euthanizing is running, playful, energetic, and pain free. Unfortunately, the same injury happened to my other dog. She fully ruptured the right CCL and partially tore the left CCL. I contacted the surgeon at VT who did the TPLO's on my other dog and he was kind enough to expedite the surgery and perform the TPLO on her...even though he was not on orthopedic rotation. She also had a TPLO on the left leg a few months later. She healed beautifully and if you didn't know she had undergone surgeries, you could never tell by watching her walk/run.

The vets at Vinton Vet Hospital are woefully out of touch with advances in veterinary medicine. Although they regularly attend continuing education seminars, they are reluctant to consider modern/better methods for treating conditions which they have been treating in the same manner for 30+ years. They discourage their clients from seeking second opinions and become incensed when you seek alternative treatments other than what they recommend. I have spoken with others who used this facility and have described similar experiences, and in two separate cases, their dogs died because of misdiagnosis or erroneous treatment. The vet we used had an ego that far surpassed his knowledge or ability...he needs to retire.

If you have a dog that experiences ANY orthopedic injury or genetic condition (hip dysplasia) and you are considering surgical repair, DO NOT allow this veterinary hospital perform the surgery. The care at VT is incomparable (vet students are in-house, monitoring the animals 24/7) and the cost is equivalent, often LESS expensive than local vets. They research medical and technological advances and are often on the cutting edge of veterinary care.
