I miss Jow Ga.

Back around 2005 I wanted to train in Martial Arts. I was around the age of 8. My step-mom and I looked around at several places. None of them were as tuff as Jow Ga. I saw that they were very serious and worked the students hard.

It was there that I learned discipline, determination, and it's also where I met one of my bestest friends.

Miss y'all from Jow Ga.

Love,

Alexander (A.J.) Mariano

Traidional Chinese Kung Fu

3 years ago, my daughter told me she wanted to learn martial arts (she used to practice gymnastic). We visited different martial arts schools, but none of them could make her interested. In an occasional chance, we found Jow Ga Kung Fu School near Sam's Club in VA Beach. I knew Jow Ga Kung Fu is one of major traditional Chinese Kung Fu which is very popular in Southern China, South Asia and other countries. We stopped by and watched their training. My daughter seemed to like it immediately. Surprise to me, the master of the school is Mr. Hoy K. Lee. I knew his name long time ago. He is a legend level grand master. After my daughter joined the school, I found out the school not only teaches different hand forms and different kinds traditional weapons and also teaches students the kung fu related Chinese philosophy, teach students how to respect people, how to self control and how to defense your selves. All of these are necessaries for a traditional Chinese Kung Fu school.

Another thing makes my daughter very happy is the school not only teaching the authentic Jow Ga kung fu, but also provides Lion dance and Dragon dance class. Lion dance and Dragon dance is another feature of Jow Ga Kung Fu. There are many Lion dance competitions in South Asia. Actually this is a different form of Kung Fu competition. No one can play lion dance good without strong Kung Fu foundations. I am proud my daughter is the member of Jow Ga demo team now.

Recently, Sifu Lee brought his students to New York city for an International Traditional Chinese Kung Fu Tournament. The competitors came from more than 10 countries. It was the toughest competition I have ever seen in the United States. After preliminary, semifinal, all his students made for final. Finally, his students won one $5,000 grand prize, two $3,000 2nd prizes and two $500 honorable mentions. Jow Ga was only school won the most prizes in the competition (this tournament only provided four competing categories).

As a parent, I have seen a great benefit for my daughter since she joined Jow Ga Kung Fu school. Practicing kung fu make her stronger both physically and mentally. Thus, I wish to share our experiences with other kids and parents. I sincerely believe all people, no matter kids or adults will enjoy practicing the Jow Ga kung fu.

kung fu

i searched for kung fu schools when i first moved to the hampton roads area and Jow Ga is the closest that I could find to traditional chinese martial arts. I studied Hung Ga, another kung fu system, up North which has many similarities. I'm sorry the reviewer above only saw a small sliver of what the school offers. I've been there for about half a year now and I've learned practical knife self defense, many punches, kicks, blocks, etc. they really stress learning forms which I really enjoy that since it is how kung fu is traditionally taught. I'm about to start my first weapon soon, and from what I understand, there's opportunities to learn more weapons forms. there isn't a belt system either which i felt took off a lot of pressure for me. but i'll tell you first hand, it is not a walk in the park!

overall, i do recommend jow ga for someone who is searching for a traditional chinese martial art, a challenge, and a great workout.
