Thermafiber, headquartered in Wabash, Ind., is one of the largest manufacturers of mineral wool in the Americas, serving the insulation industry since 1934. Mineral or 'rock' wool is produced from blast furnace slag, a by-product of the steel industry and other naturally occurring rock. These raw materials are melted in a cupola furnace at temperatures above 2600 F, spun into fiber and either left loose (granulated) or formed into an insulating blanket or board. Thermafiber products are also considered 'green' due to the fact that 85 percent of the product is made from recycled blast furnace slag material. Since the mineral wool is made from slag and or rock, it has unique cost-performance attributes in high temperature, fire protection, thermal control and sound control applications. Thermafiber's products are sold to construction markets, power and process markets and a wide variety of industrial and original equipment manufacturer markets.
