The American College of Cardiology (ACC) was chartered and incorporated as a teaching institution in 1949, and established its headquarters, called Heart House, in Bethesda, Md. in 1977. The mission of the American College of Cardiology is to advocate for quality cardiovascular care through education, research promotion, development and application of standards and guidelines, as well as influencing health care policy. The ACC represents the majority of board certified United States cardiovascular physicians. Most ACC members work in private group practices, with the balance working in medical schools/universities, solo practice, private hospitals, government institutions/hospitals and HMOs. The majority of ACC members spend their professional time providing direct patient care and consultation, as well as performing a wide range of procedures.
