Founded in 1872, the American Public Health Association is one of the oldest and largest organizations of public health professionals in the world. The association aims to protect all Americans and their communities from preventable, serious health threats through community-based health promotion and disease prevention activities. The American Public Health Association represents more than 50,000 health providers, educators, environmentalists, policy makers and health officials at all levels working within and outside government organizations and educational institutions. It honors individuals with several awards, such as the Martha May Eliot Award and David P. Rall Award for Advocacy. The American Public Health Association participates in Partners in Information Access for the Public Health Workforce, which is a collaborative project to provide public health professionals with access to information resources to help them improve the health of the American public. Through its publications, the American Journal of Public Health and The Nation s Health, the association communicates the latest public health science and practice to members and opinion leaders.
