Dr. Sidawy is Professor and the Lewis B. Saltz Chair of the Department of Surgery at the George Washington University Medical Center. He assumed this position after completing 14 year tenure as the Chief of Surgery at the Washington DC VA Medical Center in Washington, DC. Dr. Sidawy is a Vascular Surgeon; he completed his Vascular Surgery Fellowship in Boston University Hospital. He also obtained a M.P.H. degree in Health Care Administration from George Washington University. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate of the University. He has published over 135 peer-reviewed articles, over 55 chapters, numerous abstracts, and made several national and international presentations; his publications span the clinical, research, and educational fields. In addition, Dr. Sidawy just concluded a 7.5 year term as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Vascular Surgery, the premier journal in the specialty ranking first among its peers in the United States and across the world. During his term as editor, Dr. Sidawy launched the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders in 2013 and the Journal of Vascular Surgery-Cases in 2015 and served as their Founding Editor-in-Chief. He edited three textbooks; the Basic Science of Vascular Disease in 1997; Diabetic Foot, Lower Extremity Arterial Disease, and Limb Salvage published in 2006; and the 9th edition of Rutherford's Vascular Surgery and Endovascular therapy in 2018, a two-volume text often called the bible of the specialty. Dr. Sidawy currently serves on the Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons. He was the President of the Society for Vascular Surgery, the largest national professional organization in the specialty. He is also the Past-President of the Vascular Disease Foundation, a multispecialty organization with a mission to improve the education and awareness of vascular disease and health and the umbrella organization of the PAD and the Venous Disease coalitions. Dr. Sidawy's previous positions include: a 10-year tenure as the Director of the Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program at the Georgetown University and the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC; a member of the Vascular Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery; the Chair of the Distinguished Fellows Council of the Society for Vascular Surgery; and President of the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, the Eastern Vascular Society, the Chesapeake Vascular Society, the Metropolitan Washington Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, and the Washington Academy of Surgery. He is the recipient of a number of awards and honors, including, The LaSalle D. Lefall award for 'Outstanding contributions to the profession of surgery and to the entire metropolitan Washington community' from the Metropolitan Washington Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. In addition, the Chapter has named a lectureship after Dr. Sidawy for his over 20 years of service to the Chapter. Also, the 2009 New York Vascular Surgery Fellows Competition Award was named after Dr. Sidawy; this is a clinical and basic scientific competition of all vascular fellows and residents in training programs in the eastern region of the United States.
