The District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (FEMS) provides emergency medical care and transportation, fire prevention and suppression, hazardous material response, and technical rescue services to residents and visitors in the District of Columbia. The department s resources are deployed in more than 30 neighborhood fire stations and include over 35 emergency management transport units, various engine companies, ladder trucks, rescue squads, hazardous materials units and fireboat companies. The District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department operates a communication center that responds to nearly 150,000 incidents and service calls annually, an average of 420 calls per day. With various stations in Washington, D.C., the department also provides protection for special events, such as major demonstrations and the Presidential Inauguration. In addition, it provides fire and medical protection for Presidential motorcades and helicopter landings.
