I've had Mr Lilly as my public defender in the past for a traffic and he was able to have that case dismissed. That was ten years ago. He's been assigned as my public defender again for another case. After I finally find out he was my public defender I phoned him to ask his advice on the matter, he never bothered to return my call. Two weeks after that I receive a letter from him stating if I decide to plead guilty, I could be placed on unsupervised probation as long I have at least $600.My court was looming near and I injured myself so badly that I missed my second date because I was being seen in the ER where I live. My mother and I both called and left messages the night before, and I called again the morning of my hearing while waiting EMS to arrive to take my crippled butt to the hospital. Its obvious he didn't bother to check his messages. I received a call from him THE DAY AFTER my hearing saying a warrant has been issued for my arrest since I wasn't in court that day. That if I have documented proof I was in the ER the day of my hearing, then the judge would retract the warrant. He didn't bother to tell how to go about submitting the necessary paperwork.I called him as soon as I received his voicemail and I doubt he will reply in time. If you are assigned this man, I highly recommend you request another public defender!!!

Mr. Lilly was an apathetic, unresponsive, and painfully incompetent attorney. I had the extreme displeasure of having Mr. Lilly assigned as my public defender in a series of traffic violations. Rather than take the time to learn my case and zealously advocate my case, he ignored me, belittled me, and suggested I plead my case in a foolish manner. Only after he attempted to have me screw myself over, he left immediately and failed to file any mandatory appeals paperwork. Had it not been for the Beaufort county assistant district attorney taking it upon himself to do right by me, and on his own motion, the ADA appealed the rulings and pleadings and reduced the charges, i would have been in a world of trouble, been on probation for a year and have no resolution to my traffic violations. I have done my research and learned that Mr. Lilly has been sanctioned by the North Carolina Bar Association in the past for failure to do his job and respond to his clients, and can promise that I will also be filing a grievance with the NC State Bar. I would not suggest anyone utilize Mr. Lilly's services for any reason.
