The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland is a private, nonprofit, animal shelter, established in 1911, operating in southern Maine. It provides temporary care and shelter for stray, abandoned and relinquished animals and places them into responsible and caring homes. All animals adopted from the ARL are spayed or neutered before they are sent foradoption. Every year, it takes in more than 4,000 stray and abandoned animals. The ARL works to create awareness and support for the humane treatment of all animals and to end animal overpopulation through education and the promotion of spaying and neutering. Majority of its funding comes from donations from the general public. The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland is located in Westbrook, Maine.
