The Westport Police Department preserves human lives and property, protects public peace and the rights of citizens, prevents crime and disorder, and enforces local, state and federal laws. It employs a staff of more than 70 full-time sworn officers and over 70 full- and part-time civilians and community volunteers. The Westport Police Department operates the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which deals with high-risk and dangerous situations, including barricaded persons, high-risk warrant arrests, explosive devices and heavily armed criminals. The department provides a variety of community services, such as fingerprinting, background checks, bicycle registration, gun permits, and domestic violence and sexual offenses prevention.
