The objective of accent modification is not the elimination of accents or to make everyone sound the same. It is possible to speak English with a foreign accent and still be understood. However, when the accent is so distracting that it detracts from the message and the listener loses interest in listening, then it is considered a detriment to communication. Modifying your accent does not mean losing your identity. Learning to modify your accent gives you options of how to communicate.
