Pocono Downs offers live harness racing, year-round simulcast wagering and specialevents. Pocono Downs opened in 1965, when more than 12,000 fans jammed its infield, clubhouse and grandstand. Prior to the opening of Pocono, there was racing at Liberty Bell to the south and the Meadows to the west. A new era in the history of Pocono Downs began in late January 2005, when Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority purchased the racetrack and its off-track wagering facilities from Penn National Gaming. Pocono Downs has 143 racing days per year. They race on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays with Sundays added for the months of May, June and July. While harness tracks such as Liberty Bell, Brandywine and Roosevelt have closed, Pocono Downs strives to be one of the best small tracks in North America. It is located 2 miles northeast of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
