Attorney Olkin is a native of Eastern Connecticut, having grown up in Norwich. He graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1987, and from the University of Connecticut in 1991. Four years later he earned his law degree from Pace University School of Law in White Plains, New York. He sat for and passed the New York State Bar Examination in 1995. He then pursued a career in sabermetrics, the scientific study of player and team performance in baseball, a field more recently brought to prominence by the book and movie Moneyball. He worked as a writer and analyst for STATS Inc. outside of Chicago, then as a writer and editor for USA Baseball Weekly (later renamed Sports Weekly) outside of Washington, D.C. From 2004 to 2010 he worked as a sabermetrics consultant to major league baseball teams, advising general managers on player personnel decisions. His clients included the Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals and Toronto Blue Jays. In 2011 he decided to launch a career as an attorney, sitting for and passing the Connecticut Bar Exam while interning at the Public Defenders’ Offices at G.A. 10 in New London and G.A. 11 in Danielson. He opened a solo practice in Willimantic in 2012.
