In the shale plays, drilling operations produce a significant waste stream of drill cuttings that must be treated and subsequently hauled to a landfill for disposal. The typical method for handling this waste stream is to mix the cuttings with lime and fly ash to tie up free liquids to meet landfill disposal criteria. The operator is effectively paying for large quantities of additional material, using a labor intensive method to facilitate the mixing to achieve the cuttings treatment, and then hauling this large volume of material to landfill for disposal. This results in significant costs to the operator as well as logistical challenges.
