Abri Veterinary Hospital

Abri Veterinary Hospital offers a broad range of professional services. We have an IDEXX in-house lab that runs general blood chemistries, CBC's, electrolytes, thyroid (T-4) and cortisol tests. More complex panels and blood tests are sent twice daily to IDEXX Reference Laboratory in Greensboro. We can access results online as soon as they are posted. Readily having access to a pet's blood work allows for a more timely diagnosis and treatment. We also do in-house testing for intestinal parasites, heartworms, feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency viruses and parvo virus. Pre-operative blood panels are run on the morning of surgeries which allows us to determine the pet's health status more accurately just prior to anesthesia. It also eliminates the need for an additional trip. Our in-house radiology equipment is digital allowing for computer enhanced images with greater detail. This aids in making a more accurate diagnosis. Our digital dental system allows for thorough evaluation of teeth from crown to root. We can also evaluate the maxillary and mandibular bone around the roots. We do contrast studies of the gastrointestinal and urinary systems. We have an Ultrasound machine for basic ultrasound evaluations. We also do endoscopic evaluations as needed. More complex ultrasound and endoscopic procedures are referred to a veterinary specialty group located nearby. In addition to spays and neuters and teeth cleaning, we do a broad range of surgical procedures. We do bone plating and pinning for fractures. We do soft tissue surgeries such as tumor removals, splenectomies, gastrointestinal surgeries, urinary bladder surgery to remove stones and tumors, urethrostomies, ear canal resections for chronic ear disease and lateral stabilization procedures for torn ACLs of the knee. Complicated orthopedic procedures involving the spine, pelvis and limbs and complicated eye surgeries are referred to a nearby specialty practice. We use isoflurane anesthesia as our general inhalant anesthetic. Our surgeries are performed on a heated operating table and our patients' vital signs are monitored continuously with a surgi-vet monitor. Our patients are given analgesic and antibiotic injections prior to and after surgery as indicated. A fresh steam sterilized and monitored surgery pack is used on each patient. Heart disease can be evaluated with both an in-house EKG system and Cardio-pet: a telephone based system that allows instant access to a cardiac specialist with the EKG being transmitted over the telephone lines. We evaluate blood pressure with two types of monitors. We use a tonopen to evaluate eye pressure to diagnose and treat glaucoma.
