Emergency Room mistakes

My mother transported to the Tyler County Emergency room by ambulance after she fell and was having terrible pain in her hip. My mother has many health problems including diabetes, heart problems (has a pace maker). She takes a large amount of blood thinners because of her heart problems. A couple of hours after we arrived at the emergency room, my mother's hip was X-rayed. She also had an extremely large bruise on her arm. I expressed my concerns for internal bleeding because she has had to have blood transfusions before because of internal bleeding. Shortly after taking the X-ray the doctor told me he saw no break and I could take her home. I immediately told him that I could not get her out of the car because of the pain that she was having and would he please keep her another few hours until I could contact her doctor in Beaumont. He refused, but did call an ambulance to take her home for me. A few hours later my husband came and helped me get her to Baptist Hospital Emergency Room in Beaumont. When we arrived and they took X-rays and blood work, we discovered that she not only had a broken hip which would require surgery, but that she had lost so much blood that she would need a transfusion before she could have surgery. Three days later a representative from Tyler County Hospital called my mother's house to tell her that her X-rays showed that she might have a broken hip.--Big surprise!!! She had already had surgery. After our experience, I have learned of two other people within the last few weeks, one an elderly lady with three broken vertebrae in her neck and a child with a broken leg, whowere sent home after being X-Rayed there and told there were no broken bones. If the Emergency Room does not have competent Radiologists on site to read X-rays, then they should not take them in these cases and give the patients a false sense of getting emergency treatment. It is only a matter of time before such mistakes will could cause permanent if not deadly results!!!!

Dr. Wright, CEO, responded to Mrs. Freeman after doing an investigation on 6/10/08. The ER doctor noted that Mrs. Freeman had an appointment with her orthopedic doctor on the next day and determined that was in her best interest rather than admitting her to the hospital.
