On a recent trip from Colorado...

On a recent trip from Colorado to Tulsa we stopped at Waggs and really looked forward to the BBQ and fried catfish that the marquee highlighted. Boy were we disappointed. But, let's start at the beginning. Upon entering we were greeted with no less that four signs stating "wait to be seated"... OK, we got that. They wanted us to wait to be seated. There was also a framed article about the restaurant from a travel magazine which heightened our expectations. The decor was GREAT. It looked like a hunting lodge/museum with lots to look at. The menu was a newspaper format with 'newsie' things about the restaurant and the listing of foods was pretty straight forward. I ordered the fried catfish (yum) with coleslaw and the salad buffet. My dining companion ordered the three meat combo (ribs, sausage, brisket) with baked beans and coleslaw. The salad buffet was a good selection of basic tossed salad ingredients and several other items like pea salad and crab salad (imitation crab). All in all, it was a good salad buffet. I was hungry and it was good. Then, the entrees arrived and it quickly went downhill. The fish was WAY overcooked. So much so that it had begun to disappear into a crunchy nothingness. The two fillets were nothing but cornmeal crust. The coleslaw was tasty, but there was more thin liquid than cabbage or carrots. The hushpuppies were frozen tubes of meal fried almost as long as the fish had been fried. The ribs were greasy with a lot of fat... a LOT of fat. The sausage was greasy and tasteless. The brisket was so dry and hard, it was inedible. I can't stress enough how dry and hard it was. It must have been under a heat lamp all day. The BBQ sauce was tasteless. My companion took two bites (two because he couldn't believe the first one was so bad) and didn't eat any more. We were VERY disappointed with this restaurant and won't give it another chance. I mentioned to the waitress (who, by the way, had never refilled our drinks until we waved her down and asked) that the fish had been WAY overcooked and her answer was, "Do you want the cook to fry another one for you?" Well, no, I didn't was another overcooked piece of fish. We had some cheese and fruit in the car on the road back to Tulsa. Don't waste your time or money on this restaurant. I gave it a one star rating because I couldn't give it a 0 rating. My father was a chef and restaurant manager, so I do know about good food and service.
