The board of health and its staff pursue the goal of creating healthy communities by working to fulfill various public health functions, such as preventing epidemics, protecting the environment, promoting healthy behaviors and monitoring the health status of the community. The board also mobilizes community action for health, responds to disasters, assures the accessibility of medical care, reaches out to link high-risk, disadvantaged persons to needed services and provides medical care when needed. The board also trains health workers skilled in health promotion and disease prevention and conducts research to provide solutions to public health problems. Its environmental health division inspects and licenses campgrounds and parks to ensure proper spacing, adequate sanitary conditions, potable water supplies, sewage disposal and general safety.
