Dance is about self-expression through outward movement. At The Stage Door, we create a professional, encouraging environment that promotes a student’s self-confidence, self-appreciation, and personal discipline. These traits enhance the dancer’s ability to work creatively and expressively, which is critical for success on and off the stage. We teach Ballet/Pointe, Lyrical, Modern, Tap, Jazz, Hip-hop, Acrobatic/Tumbling, and Baton styles. Theater training and performance teaches self-expression through improvisation, monologue, scene work, and written critique. Students will learn the foundations of how to “get into character,” script reading, and stage direction, which helps to enhance memorization. In addition to developing stage skills, theater classes can have a positive impact off-stage. Performance in front of an audience prepares someone for public speaking and professional communication by helping them to get over “stage fright.” Ultimately, this boosts one’s confidence and gives them the tools necessary to work effectively individually or as part of a team. We’ve even coached debate teams! Theater classes are offered for students age six through adult, and include beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Students will also train on the audition process for stage and screen. Our theater program is offered as a yearlong program, which is broken down into three 16-week sessions with a small performance at the end of each session. Professional voice training teaches students to treat their voice as an instrument, which requires maintenance and tuning. Students will be coached on proper pitch, breathing techniques, and how to project their voice effectively and safely. Learning to sing as a part of a choral ensemble also enhances teamwork skills and discipline as students learn to work together to achieve harmony in their performance. Rehearsals and practices encourage self-discipline toward achieving a goal, thus enhancing self-esteem and confidence. Simply put, you feel better when you sing! Voice classes are offered in a group setting or private solo class by scheduled appointment. Any students interested in private classes must call to schedule appointment times. Classes are offered all year with two sessions: Fall/Winter and Winter/Spring, as well as through out summer months. TRIPLE THREAT: Having multiple disciplines under your belt is the best way to shine during an audition. Dancers are encouraged to take singing lessons or become involved in choral groups to help develop their voices. Singers should definitely get involved in a musical theater or jazz classes. Actors who cannot sing or dance typically don’t make the cut as a cast member in a musical unless there is a non-musical part. From local community theater and dance lines, to a cappella groups and national auditions, our students who have gone on to pursue performing arts on some level have done so successfully by becoming a Triple Threat performer.
